There are a few ways to get to where ever you want to go, incluidng bus, train, by renting a car, and letting your homestay gardian drop you off (top 8 most liked places and most of them have links!!)

Waitomo caves NZD$81–$99 for adults and NZD$25–$37 for children 14-20 min by car You can do boatrides through waitomo caves and thats it! They provide a restaurant and cafe for people.
Hamilton Gardens free if in hamilton $20 for adults NZD Free for children under 16 18 min - 20 min you can look at the beautiful flowers and plants, even being able to take pictures. They have a cafe.
Hobbiton Movie set adults cost $130 NZD, but children aged from 11–17 are priced at $65 NZD and children from 0–10 are free, around 1hour-2hours The hobbiton movie set has guides that help you explore better. Has a resturant called the green dragon inn! (with two n's)
Raglan (Ngarunui Beach) Free for everyone. 50 mintues - 1 hour and 30 min Freely explore the beach. They don't have any resterants or food places but there are a few around the area.
Blue springs / Te Waihou Walkway Free for everyone 50 min to 1 hour can walk along the trail and touch the water. No nearby food or in the area.
Hamilton zoo $26 for adults and $12 for children. 15 - 20 min You can freely walk to any animal area just don't go in the cages! Haha! Theres a small shop that sells little sovineirs and stuffed animals, and some snacks!
Sculpture park $20 for adults (15+ years) and $5 for children (5–14 years). 20-25 min enjoy birdwatching, treasure hunts and sometimes even seasonal events! Theres a cafe in the park called Roosting Ruru Cafe.
Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway free for evryone. 1hour - 1hour 20 min You can hike or cycle here but it isn't a random tourist full place. No food in the walkway path but near it.
